HOLIDAYS WHEN YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED LOSS

This time of year is often very difficult for people who have experienced the loss of a loved one.  There may be an expectation from others and even yourself, that because it is the holiday season, there should be an overwhelming sense of happiness. Instead, maybe you are avoiding the holiday decorating, shopping, and other festivities that you enjoyed in previous years.

Some may choose to deal with the lonely and empty feelings by doing the opposite, that is, by overindulging.  Maybe you find that you are buying an overabundance of gifts, hosting many holiday parties, along with eating and drinking more than normal.  These are ways of dealing with depression and loneliness.

What is described above are only a few of the ways people deal with their feelings regarding the loss of their loved ones. During the holidays, many people experience a heightened sense of the loss because there are many reminders of how things were in the past when that individual was taking part in all the holiday activities.

Remember that no amount of gifts, food, or alcohol will bring your loved one back.  These ways of coping will only provide temporary relief from the pain.  Instead, look through old photographs with family and remember the good times in the past.  Talking with family and friends about how you are feeling is a good way to acknowledge these feelings of sadness.  People often experience a sense of relief when the holidays are over.
